Abbaye de Reigny
Religious Heritage
Founded in 1128 by Abbot Étienne de Toucy, under the authority of Saint Bernard, the abbey of Reigny was placed under the protection of Pope Eugene III in 1147. It was very powerful and prosperous in the Middle Ages and welcomed up to 300 monks and lay brothers. On the edge of Cure, former monastic park whose particularity lies in its very sophisticated hydraulic system: a system of dikes and canals was built to allow irrigation. Private park.
In 1493, Charles VIII made it a Royal Foundation. The Hundred Years' War, the Huguenots and the French Revolution took their toll on the beautiful building, which nevertheless retains some very interesting vestiges of its prestigious past: the exceptional XNUMXth century Cistercian refectory (there are only three examples left in France) with its elegant double-bay nave that has retained its period polychromy, the monks' hall and dormitory redeveloped in the XNUMXth century.
From the demolished buildings, one can still make out the foundations of the abbey church. Finally, the entire Cistercian hydraulic network has been preserved and the cloister basin has just been restored.
Possibility of visits in English and for the hearing impaired in LPC (spoken language supplemented). Access for people with reduced mobility.
